The practice was established in 1929 by R. B. "Bob"
Garvin. Alan Agee, the firm's current senior partner, joined Mr. Garvin
in 1972, but Mr. Garvin passed away in 1975. Brett Agee and James
W. Carlton, Jr., joined the firm in 1988, followed by John Mashburn
and, most recently, Steven Kendall. In 2001, the firm became one of
the very few firms to have argued and won an appeal to the United
States Supreme Court.

The firm is AV-rated, which is the highest rating awarded by
Martindale-Hubbel. Martindale-Hubbel has been rating attorneys for
over 100
years, based upon confidential surveys of judges and other lawyers.
The "A"
portion of the rating signifies "very high to preeminent"
legal ability,
taking into account the experience, nature of firm's practice and
qualifications relevant to the practice of law, while the "V"
signifies
"very high" ethical standards, including faithful adherence
to professional
standards of conduct and ethics of the legal profession, professional
reliability and diligence, and standards relevant to the discharge
of
professional responsibilities.
